Hello World!

I’m Iraklis Kyriakidis

Software Engineering Leader

Backend systems for fintech, AML and payments - built in .NET, Azure and AWS.

What I do

I’m a software engineering manager and backend specialist. Most of my work sits where financial systems meet hard technical constraints - high volumes, strict regulation, and data that has to be right the first time.

Financial crime & compliance

AML, sanctions and PEP screening, KYC, and transaction monitoring. Systems that have to satisfy regulators as well as engineers, where a false negative is a legal problem and a false positive is an operational one. Working familiarity with fraud detection.

Payments & transaction processing

Payment systems, card payments, wallets, invoicing and BNPL. Real-time flows handling millions of transactions a day, where staying correct under load is the whole requirement.

Credit, collections & decision support

Credit scoring, loan management, debt collection, and budgeting and forecasting tools. Decision support systems where the output drives a financial decision, so the reasoning has to be explainable as well as correct.

Backend & distributed architecture

APIs and data-intensive services in C# and .NET, on SQL Server, with Kafka, RabbitMQ and Redis where the shape of the problem calls for them. Transaction processing at volume, designed to stay correct under load.

Cloud & delivery

Azure and AWS, containerised with Docker and Kubernetes, deployed through CI/CD pipelines. Infrastructure that a team can actually operate, rather than a diagram that only works on the day it was drawn.

Legacy modernization

Taking systems that still earn their keep but have stopped being safe to change, and getting them moving again - incrementally, in production, without a rewrite that never lands.

Engineering leadership

Leading teams, running 1:1s, performance reviews and hiring, owning delivery planning, and sitting on architecture committees. Technical direction across teams, not just within one.

Experience

Building and leading backend teams in financial services since 2007 - in Greece, Sweden, Austria and Ireland.

  1. 2024 - present

Software Engineering Manager Natech Banking Solutions

Leading six engineers across three production systems in the AML and fintech domains. Cut incident rates and deployment failures by 90% through CI/CD and engineering-practice improvements, and improved AML system performance by 70% through architectural and database work. Joined as a senior engineer on the same platform, building fuzzy matching and semantic search for screening workflows.

  2. 2023 - 2024

    Senior Software Engineer Netcompany-Intrasoft

Loan management for Cepal Hellas - payments, ticketing and KYC workflows on Azure. In parallel, a secure back-office for IASO integrating Namirial digital signatures against EU compliance requirements.

  3. 2022 - 2023

    Senior Software Engineer hi.health, Vienna

Core backend for a platform automating insurance claims and enabling cashless payments globally, built as microservices across Kubernetes and AWS Lambda and integrated with external payment providers.

  4. 2018 - 2020

Senior Software Engineer Betsson Group, Stockholm

The wallet system behind every Betsson brand - bets, wins, bonuses, rebalances and refunds - processing millions of real-time transactions daily under regulatory scrutiny, on a distributed event-driven architecture.

  5. 2016 - 2018

    Team Lead Qliro, Stockholm

Led a cross-functional team and sat on the company-wide architecture committee. Built invoicing, order management and BNPL services, a Kafka-based system routing GDPR data requests across the organisation, and PSD2 open-banking proofs of concept with Nordea.

How I work

I build with clean architecture, TDD, BDD and DDD, and I’m an agile advocate - though I care more about whether a team can ship confidently on a Friday than about which ceremony it holds on a Monday.

I work closely with product, engineering and business stakeholders, turning complex requirements into practical technical solutions. In regulated domains that translation is most of the job: the hard part is rarely the code, it’s agreeing precisely what the system is supposed to guarantee.

Remote since 2020, after a decade in distributed Nordic and European teams. Based in Greece (EET/EEST) with overlap into US Eastern mornings, working from a dedicated home office with redundant power and connectivity.

Background

MSc in Information Systems Management from Stockholm University, and a BSc in Computer Science from the University of Hertfordshire. Certified Scrum Master.

I spent a decade working in Stockholm before moving back to Greece, where I now work remotely. Greek is my first language, I work in English, and I speak enough Swedish to be polite about it.

A bit more

  • I’m an early adopter. I put up my first web page over a USRobotics modem on a dial-up connection at 9,600 bps.
  • I got my first mobile phone in 1994 - an Ericsson GH 218.
  • I like travelling a lot, especially by car.
  • Fast cars, motorbikes, RIBs - anything that releases some adrenaline.
  • I love the sea: swimming, diving, sailing, all of it.
  • I’ve been hacking hardware since I was a kid.
  • I speak English, Swedish (bara lite), Greek and Pontic Greek - originally spoken in the Pontus region on the southern shores of the Black Sea.
  • I read a lot. I like learning new things.
  • I’m fascinated by finance and I support the FIRE movement - Financial Independence, Retire Early.

That’s me, today. I’ll be different tomorrow - hopefully better.
